Towards a taxonomy of arguments for and against street renaming

Abstract In 2016, a special issue of the Linguistic Landscapes: An International Journal explored nexus between LL and collective memory studies, calling for more research at interface these disciplines. Our analysis adds to recent studies by exploring ways in which commemorative street renaming processes are discursively embedded. We build on memorialisation as well critical toponymy analyse media discourses that accompany, support or contest naming practices urban streetscape large East German city during last century. Based this dataset, we develop typology arguments against favour renaming. The longitudinal local press vis-à-vis ongoing resemioticisation reveals complex relationship lived political history, freedom press, type argument stances encoded therein.
